Poker house rules and terminology
Rules
- Players are dealt two private cards (hole cards) that belong to them alone.
- Five community cards are dealt face-up on the board.
- Players use the best combination of five cards to form their hand.
- Betting rounds occur before the flop (first three community cards), after the flop, after the turn (fourth community card), and after the river (fifth community card).
- Players can check, bet, raise, or fold in each betting round.
- If a player can’t or doesn’t want to match a bet, they can fold, but any money they’ve already bet stays in the pot. When other players go above the original bet, this creates a side pot that the original player isn’t eligible to win.
- The best hand, according to traditional hand rankings, wins the pot. If multiple pots (main and side pots) are present, they are awarded based on hand strength and betting participation.
- If a player does not play in time, their hand is folded and they are removed from the game.
